This Agent is supported on the following platforms: - NetWare 4.2 (SP9) - NetWare 5.1 (SP8) - NetWare 6.0 (SP5) - NetWare 6.5 (SP5) The Agent software kit consists of VV.NLM which is a command line version of the system which performs tasks such as backup, restore, re-synch and other requests. --------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 Release History and Changes for version 5.0 October 29th, 2004, First release - version 5.00.1646 August 31st, 2005, Second release - version 5.01.1886 November 11th, 2005, Third release - version 5.02.1943 November 28th, 2005, Fourth release - version 5.03.1955 February 20th, 2006, Fifth release - version 5.04.2017 _______________________________________________________________ =============================================================== 2 FEATURES 2.1 In this release, the quick file scanning technology (QFS) has been advanced to increase the speed and accuracy of file scanning for backups. --------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 The installation of 5.0x EVault InfoStage Novell Netware Agent now gives you the option of automatically installing Open Transaction Manager (OTM) during the installation procedure on Netware 5.1, 6.0, and 6.5 systems. See section 5.2 for special OTM installation steps on Netware 4.2 systems. _______________________________________________________________ =============================================================== 3 FIXES Fixes for version 5.04.2017 DTS#6413 Restoring Trustees-only removes all data in the file (zero-byte file). This has been fixed in this release. DTS#6552/6720 NetWare Agent backup of files with changed extended attributes or security streams causes issue with 5.26 InfoStage Director. This has been fixed in this release. If extended attributes or security streams have changed, then QFS is now turned off for that particular file. DTS#6001 Netware Agent is unable to get alternate name space for some files during backup. This has been fixed with the release of Support Pack 5 for NetWare 6.5. DTS#5327 NetWare Agent abends on Netware 6.5 with SP3. This has been fixed with the release of Support Pack 5 for NetWare 6.5. --------------------------------------------------------------- FIXES for version 5.03.1955 DTS#6005: Unable to restore to another computer trustee information in a Netware multi-server environment. Fixed in this release. The trustee ID was translated to an NDS path relative to the server's Bindery context. Now we convert relative to absolute during backup, and absolute to relative (in the new server's context) during the restore. DTS#6047: Netware Agent backup task is not backing up files \ that end in "." (that is, end with a period), or files that have asterisks in the name. These are illegal in the Long (Windows) namespace. Fixed in this release. Now these files are restored in the Long namespace, with any "Windows illegal" characters being translated into Long-name-space friendly files. As a workaround you can restore to an NFS/Longname space directory. DTS#6083: Netware "Server errors" when attempting to restore data to original location. If the file is selected to be restored to an alternate location, the file restores without issue in its original size. Fixed in this release. This problem was related to added overhead on the server, triggered by unnecessary system calls. --------------------------------------------------------------- FIXES for version 5.02.1943 PR-1-9487: Restore of NetWare files did not restore trustee information. This has been fixed in this release. --------------------------------------------------------------- FIXES for version 5.01.1886 DTS# 5116 DTA.CPP errors: NetWare 5.0 Agent can fail with error: 'internal error: *** Dta.cpp, line 490 ***' error This has been fixed in this release. _______________________________________________________________ =============================================================== 4 KNOWN ISSUES 4.1 Due to changes in the delta file format, Quick File Scanning will be temporarily disabled during the first backup following an upgrade. This could result in the first backup after an upgrade taking longer than usual. If the QFS option is enabled (the default), QFS will automatically be re-enabled on subsequent backups. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.2 NetWare files with long filenames are not restored to volumes without long namespace support. Also, the installation directory name should be limited to a maximum of 8 characters. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.3 The system has a problem backing up MAC folders & files (pre-OSX platforms) with certain characters {extra spaces ( ), double periods (..), forward slashes (/)}. The Agent can backup and restore Mac created files (including alternate streams) provided the path to the file does not contain "special" characters. Special characters are any characters not permitted under Windows when creating a path (for example "*", "?", "\", ">" etc.). Files containing special characters in the path will be omitted from the backup. This restriction has existed since the Agent begun supporting Mac name space. At the present the only workaround to the problem is to rename the affected directories and files. Keep in mind that some system created files (like "Icon?") also contain special characters and those items cannot be renamed. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.4 Loading VV.NLM/VVAGENT.NLM in protected memory on NetWare 6 This is not recommended because protected memory on NetWare 6, and 5.1 with recently released support packs, creates a "preemptible" environment for applications loaded into it. It is oriented more to LibC applications. This environment probably does not work as smoothly as it will in future NetWare versions, and currently tasks loaded into it may not be preempted at all (at least on uniprocessor servers). Any attempts to load the EVault agent into protected memory may lead to loss of data, both live and backed up. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.5 Cannot connect to server. VVAgent not in memory if auto-load of VVLOAD and VVPRGLIB is interrupted. It is recommended that VVAGENT.NLM should be loaded at the end of AUTOEXEC.NCF (i.e.: to make sure it is loaded after NETDB.NLM.) --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.6 NFS files created by Unix on a NetWare server cannot be backed up by the NetWare Agent. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.7 NetWare API problem: DOS File attributes are not restored on DOS disks under NetWare 4.2. Warning messages such as "Error setting date and time" are put in the logs. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.8 (1-9307) If you are running version 3.2 (and above, i.e.: 3.2+) of the Agent, and it contains a task created by an older Agent, you may receive an error if you attempt to upgrade the Agent to version 4.x, using the upgrade program "cupgd240.nlm". The upgrade may not recognize the older backup type “Type=SAF” in the configuration file. To resolve this problem you should use the version 3.2 (and above, i.e.: 3.2+) EVault Administrator program to open the task property and click OK to save it. This will change the task file format to be upgradeable to the 4.x version. The upgrade program will now run successfully. Note: To upgrade earlier versions (from 2.2E, up to 3.10) you need to first run the version 3.3 installation. From here (as noted above) you can now run the upgrade program. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.9 If, when you install a new NetWare 5 or 6 server, and select NWASPI.CDM during installation of tape drives, you may receive an abend when you open a task. The agent abends only if the tape device is not recognized by the OS (i.e.: an unbound object). A workaround for this problem is to load NWTAPE.CDM so the server can recognize the tape drive, and then load VVAGENT. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.10 Due to a bug in Open Transaction Manager (OTM) v1.12.322, backing up the entire SYS volume can fail or, under stressed conditions Error message - "FLM -E-0006 OTM failed to start up: OTM ERROR (3758100511)-The volume the cache file resides on is out of disk space", even though this is not the case. Columbia Data Products (producers of OTM) are aware of and addressing this issue. Currently there is no workaround. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.11 (1-25674) NetWare Agent may not detect drop of security stream on a directory when in QFS mode. Workaround: Disable Quick File Scan for Task properties and scheduled entries. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.12 (1-33326) Error creating NDS data-file SYS:\SYSTEM\ SERVDATA.NDS, returned error -625. Agent periodically fails to backup when the System State is selected. Workaround: Manually unload DSBACKER.nlm from the system, then run an ad-hoc or scheduled backup. This issue is currently being addressed for a future release. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.13 You may have a 5.0 Agent with a 5.x vault, with multiple backups scheduled to run at the same time. They will all start, but some may appear to "hang" part way through. However, they all do finish successfully. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4.14 DTS#6197 Backup of MAC files from Netware server can fail. If the first selection in a backup task's include list is a MAC file, the backup will fail. Workaround: Avoid placing any MAC files as the first selection in an include list for a backup task. _______________________________________________________________ =============================================================== 5 INSTALLATION NOTES 5.1 Installation Requirements The installation requirements for the Agent under Novell NetWare are as follows: * A 32 bit x86 or compatible processor. * NetWare 4.2 or 5.1 or 6.0 or 6.5 * At least 10MB of free disk space * Minimum Memory requirements: NW 4.2 - 64 MB.
