SharePoint: Getting Started Guide

We offer Microsoft's Windows SharePoint Services v2.0, which allows organizations to quickly and easily create web sites for intranets and extranets.  SharePoint lets you set up web sites to communicate with your coworkers, customers, and suppliers to share files, calendars, contacts, tasks, and any kind of list.  The best part is that you don't need to be a technical person to build these web sites - everything can be done via your web browser; however, advanced editing can be done using FrontPage 2003.

How to create a SharePoint site:

  1. Log into our online Hosted Exchange Control Panel and click on "Add/Delete SharePoint Sites", then click on "Add SharePoint Site".

  2. Explanation of each field on this page:
    1. SharePoint Plan: choose the plan that is best for you.
    2. SharePoint Site Name: a unique name for this site.  e.g. intranet.
    3. SharePoint Site Title: a title for this site.  e.g. Acme Intranet.
    4. Description: a description to describe this site.  e.g. Our company intranet.
    5. SharePoint Site URL: the subdomain and domain for your site.  NOTE: You must own the domain.  e.g. intranet.YourDomain.com.
    6. Site Owner: the user who is the administrator for this site.
    7. Site Template: the template; for now there is only one choice.
    8. Site Language: the language; for now there is only one choice.

  3. Create the subdomain in the DNS for your domain.  Contact the administrator who has control of the DNS for your domain and ask them to create a CNAME that points your subdomain setup in option 2.e. (e.g. intranet.YourDomain.com) to:

SP3.MyOutlookOnline.com if your Sharepoint site was setup after 1/8/2007 OR

SP.MyOutlookOnline.com if your Sharepoint site was setup on or before 1/8/2007

NOTE: this can take 1-24 hours to propogate around the world once you make the change to your DNS.

  4. In a web browser, go to the URL that you picked in 2e: (e.g. http://intranet.YourDomain.com).  You will be asked to login - you MUST use the username/password of the Site Owner from step 2f.  NOTE: You must set up the URL in the DNS for the login to work; you cannot login to http://SP.MyOutlookOnline.com; alternatively, for testing purposes, you can add a new line in your hosts file:

    64.95.72.194  Intranet.YourDomain.com.

  5. You can now start customizing your SharePoint site.  Click on "Site Settings".  From here, you can click on "Manage users" to add more users to this SharePoint site.  (NOTE: username format is MAIL\Business.username, found in the "View Outlook Setup Info" page of the user account settings in the Hosted Exchange Control Panel.)  Or, you can click on "Manage sites and workspaces" to add sub-sites - for example, you can create a sub-site for marketing, which would have this url: http://intranet.YourDomain.com/marketing.

  6. If you want to give other people who don't have an Exchange mailbox on our systems (such as external employees, customers, partners, vendors, consultants, etc.) access to the SharePoint web site, then you will need to log into our web-based control panel, click on "Add/Change/Delete Users" -> "Add Other Users".

Feel free to experiment and try the different capabilities of SharePoint.

NOTE: There are additional fees for SharePoint sites, click here for details.
