Uploading Your Site

Home Page Filenames

You can use the following filenames to indicate the home page (index) for your directories:

A default document tells the web server how to behave when it receives a request for your site that does not specify a particular page. For example, when a web server receives a request for http://yourdomain.com, how should it react? It first looks for Defaults.aspx. If it doesn't find that, it looks for Default.asp, and so on until it finds a match.

When we first setup your account, we included a default.htm file. You will need to rename/remove this file for your site to work properly with default documents further down the list.

File System Structure: The Files That Make Up Your Web Site

The root-level folder for your web hosting account contains the folders for each domain you have hosted on our Shared Windows platform. Inside of each webspace (domain) you will find the following files and directories:

wwwroot This folder is the folder to which you will upload your website. It is commonly referred to as your web root, home, or public folder.
data This folder is used to store files that you don't want publically accessible. This is also a good place to store databases.

logs This folder contains your web site's Log files. Log files contain access and error records in a machine-readable form. DO NOT DELETE OR MODIFY THESE FILES.
aspnet_client This folder is located inside of wwwroot and contains ASP.NET files. DO NOT DELETE OR MODIFY THESE FILES.

Deleting and/or modifying these files or directories can cause errors in your site's operation. EasyStreet will charge for time and materials used to fix problems caused by your changes.

Development Interfaces

FTP

FTP (File Transfer Protocol), FTPS and FTPES are all enabled, and are good ways to move your files to your site, unless you are using FrontPage and taking advantage of the extensions. If you are using FrontPage to create your site, please skip down to Publishing with FrontPage.

If you are having problems making FTP connections or staying connected with FTP, set your FTP program to use Passive connections. The location of that setting varies with the FTP program you use; it's a good idea to check the Help file if you can't find it in the connection options.

Inbound FTP is restricted to your hosting account username and password.

Using FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

If you would like to, you can upload your content with an FTP program. Some good shareware software can be found at TuCows and the CNET Shareware sites.

  1. Open your favorite FTP client
  2. From your EasyStreet Hosting Account Information, enter your
    Host name e.g. ftp.wsh.easystreet.com
    Username e.g. es58xxx and password.
  3. Your FTP client will use that information to connect you to into the root folder of your hosting account at EasyStreet.
  4. Use your FTP clients tools to move (upload) your files from your computer your hosting space at EasyStreet. These tools usually appear as an arrow button, or you can drag files from one window (listing the files on your hard drive) to another (listing the files at EasyStreet).
  5. Once all of the files that make up your site are in the same window as the files listed above, you're done! Put the temporary domain name (e.g. http://domain.com.wsh.easystreet.com) into the address line of your web browser and check out your web site.

Publishing with FrontPage

FrontPage Extensions are not enabled by default for new accounts. If you would like to use FrontPage Extension features on your website, please send an e-mail to support@easystreet.com requesting that they be enabled. Please be sure to include your domain name. Please click here for more information about FrontPage Extensions and FrontPage/Expression Web setup.

Visual Studio .NET

Visual Studio .NET allows you to use a variety of different programming languages (e.g. C#, Visual Basic, C++, and ASP) to build XML web applications and post them to your Shared .NET site at EasyStreet. For more information see: Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/)
